Hadrian's Wall and Hollywood

Having recently watched King Arthur, the historic epic featuring Keira Kneightly and Clive Owen we wondered just which films have been shot on Hadrians Wall. Certainly King Arthur gave that impression, indeed the fort in the film was based upon the ancient roman site of Vindolanda. However a trawl around the world wide web shows that the film was actually shot in Eire. Ah well....so much for authenticity.

But what other films have used the wall?

Well Robin Hood Prince of theives certainly took one scene from Sycamore Gap on the wall....albeit this was supposed to take just after he landed in Dover. its the one where he finds a young lad in some trouble and hiding up the tree.

Any others...well yes

Britain's finest (2003), Directed by Jane Cameron and Tanya Cheadle.

Magnificent monuments (2000) directed by David Hall and starring, of course, Fred Dibnah

A History of Britain (2000 - 2002)

and

Seven ages of Britain ( 2003)

So apart from a few minutes of Kevin Costner nothing very dramatic which is a pity for such an historic and dramatic area. What are they missing?

Well there is 73 miles of some of the most beautiful countryside in England.

Then perhaps we need to quote from Wikipedia.

A significant portion of the wall still exists, particularly the mid-section, and for much of its length the wall can be followed on foot. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England, where it is often known simply as the Roman Wall. It was made a Unesco World Heritage Sitein 1987. English Heritage  a government organization in charge of managing the historic environment of England, describes it as "the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain".

So you can , i hope, start to get a feel for exactly how special the wall and surrounding countryside is.

If you want to find self  catering accommodation near Hadrian's Wall then Northumbria-byways.com offer some really nice cottages for rent.
