MZone Tournament Strategy: Playing with a Monster

It`s not very often when you get to see a flop that makes your hole cards virtually unbeatable, but when it does you want to get as much value as you can because in tournaments, every chip won is a step towards the final table. In the early stages this is even more important because early tournament chips have the potential to become exponential in strength with subsequent double ups.

Having a “monster” doesn’t necessarily mean your opponent can’t catch up, but as long as it is unlikely for him to catch up, you should be playing for value and keeping your opponent in the pot rather than betting him off a draw. Even better, you could entice him to bluff on the river.

When do you bet? When do you check? How much? These are the questions to be sure and profiling comes into play here. I always check my profiling statistics on Tournament Indicator when I am in a hand against a certain opponent and that helps me plan for the hand even before I see the flop. If I am up against a tight-aggressive (TAG) I will play it quite differently than if I am up against a looser quadrant player (LAG).

For example let’s say I am in the big blind with 7s6s and from late position a TAG player raises 3 times the blind to 150. The small blind calls thus offering me up 3.5:1 odds holding a decent hand with potential. My tournament situation is a more comfortable 4800 and this is an acceptable chance. All of the players get to see a flop of the seven of diamonds, seven of hearts, and 6 of clubs.

Well now, as this flop almsot causes me to spill my coffee on the keyboard it is my turn to act after a quick check from the sb. What to do…. Well I know my TAG opponent is likely to bet his big cards now so my first instinct here is to check as well. In fact, Just about anybody will bet here so I think it’s the best move right now. That’s what I do. Then TAG bets out 200 into the 350 pot, making the pot 550. Small blind runs home. TAG has 2850 left in his stack. Now if TAG has just over-cards he may call one small bet, but won’t do it on later rounds with Ace or King high. I always feel my best move here after a standard continuation bet is to re-raise an amount small enough to make him call even if he just has over-cards. Look at is a value bet. Most low entry-online tournament players won’t believe you have anything and are just trying to represent that you did.

Thus the standard move here against a TAG is to re-raise a similar amount. He bet 200, then I will re-raise to 400 - giving him exceptional odds to call 200 more into the now 950 pot. Most players, even tight ones will call that raise on the flop, but not on the turn if their hole cards are still not related to the community. If however they have an over-pair, well then they are likely to come over top of you yet again, with a bet that if it isn’t all-in, will almost certainly pot commit them.

Change this scenario to a LAG opponent and my inclination would be to generally call him on the flop, call him on the turn, then put a value bet out on the river. It may be you are up against a higher pair of hole cards, and you can eliminate him if he reraises you. If he has over-cards, you may very well get a call anyway on the river for maximum value.

One point further, when you do the re-raise, do it quickly like you weren’t even thinking about it. This irks a good number of solid playing TAGs into making bold moves at the wrong times. The few times it will work out you will eliminate a strong player from the tournament holding nothing but ace-high to your made boat.

Football Season Is Finally Here

Fall is the best time of year. No not because of the cooler temperatures and the leaves on the ground, but because it is finally time for some football.

A college team could get away with one loss during the year, but if they want a shot at the title, then they can’t afford to lose more than once.

The National Football League is a different animal, but just as good in my opinion. Again the passion is amazing, especially in the great NFL cities like Dallas, Oakland, Green Bay, and Kansas City. Sure some guys go a little overboard, in that they spend all of their free time evaluating their players and proposing ridiculous trades to the other owners in the league. Thanks to the new serial DW is now officially the longest running Science fiction serial ever with the 1st episode transmitted by the BBC on November the twenty third 1963, an episode in which the Doctor and his companions travelled back 100,000 years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat unintelligent cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire.

During the seventies the BBC expanded Doctor Who into the audio median making the 1st Dr Who Audio. When it all started the BBC solely made soundtracks from the original series and then had the Doctors of the time add some binding narration for completion. However due to their popularity soon after stories were made for Audio Book release only, often narrated by past Doctors of the TV series.

To add to this the BBC began making radio stories, again with past Drs who had played in the serial, these stories were also made available in Audio format. Another good use the BBC have found for audio with Doctor Who is the re-creation of old stories that had been lost. While I write this the BBC's Audiobook collection currently consists of over 50 . There exist Audios from the very 1st serial all the way up to the most recent show with David Tennent and even Sarah Jane and Doctor Who Torchwood Audio.

In today's world audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming everyday more an important part of our lives it's not surprising that Audio Book sales for both Dr. Who and in general have increased. Another reason why folks like Dr. Who audio is because in many cases the audio stories are now read by the actors of the serial. Mothers and fathers also buy them for kids entertainment in cars etc.

Now adopting this philosophy normally requires tight-aggressive Harrington style play, but it’s not so easy to stick to that style while witnessing the foolish players around you and their lucky, but growing stacks. Getting caught up in that though, means you are playing on your lack of emotional control, and not using a solid winning strategy.

It all comes down to numbers and probabilities. If you play tight aggressive, you will make the money often enough to build your OPM bankroll, and then play risk free forever more. Now, what do you really think is more profitable?

The Bagpipe Tree

The Mpingo tree, also called the African Blackwood, is a member of the Rosewood family that grows in the Miombo woodlands of Africa. It has a high density, great durability, and natural oils that seal the surface of the wood, making it great for musical instruments like the bagpipes.

These trees often grow naturally knotted and twisted. To use them for musical instruments, they must be straight and without defects. Less than 2% of all the wood harvested can be used for this purpose! It takes about 70 years for the Mpingo tree to reach maturity followed by 3 years of processing before it can be used to make an instrument.

The middle of the wood is black and so hard that it can blunt an axe and must be drilled before screwing or nailing it. The wood is very resistant and the roots support bacteria that increase soil fertility.

As Tanzania's national tree, it is the most valuable tree harvested and also the most expensive, requiring special equipment to harvest. These trees are currently at risk of being wiped out. There has been a shortage over the last 20 years due to weather, political instability and economics. In many places, the trees are illegally cut down or burned to clear the area for farming and livestock. Burning kills the younger trees and leaves the older trees deformed and diseased.

There are efforts in place to save the "bagpipe tree" and create a sustainable supply for the future. Reaching these goals will not only increase the amount of trees legally harvested, but will also reduce poverty in the area, help to rebuild the forests, conserve water, reduce soil erosion and, keep the music playing!

Tuning Your Bagpipes with the Korg Chromatic Tuner

Tuning your pipes can be difficult- the drones must be precisely tuned to each other and also to the chanter. Each note of the chanter must be pitched so that it properly harmonizes with the constant background sound of the drones. This tuning can be done with a well trained ear, but if you're lacking one of those, a chromatic tuner can be used.

Tuning the Chanter
Sound the low A on your chanter and note where it is tuning on the meter. Adjust the calibration buttons until your low A reads "0" on the meter. The green tuning light will come on when your meter is in tune with low A. Use the meter notes and offsets from "0" in the following table to tune the other notes of the chanter. Ensure that the meter is reading the correct "note" which will show up in the top right corner of the tuner. Notes "C" and "F" show up as "C#" and "F#" on the tuner. The first column is the Note. Second column is the ratio to Low A. Third column is the Meter Note. Fourth column is the Meter Offset.

If the top hand is sharp compared to the bottom hand, lift the reed slightly out of the chanter to bring the pitch of the top hand down. Add some hemp to the reed if necessary. If the top hand is flat to the bottom hand sink the reed further into the chanter. This will bring up the pitch of the top hand relative to the bottom hand. To flatten individual notes, add a piece of tape to cover the top of the first open hole on the chanter. Sharpening individual notes requires modification to the chanter reed or chanter and should only be done by experienced players.

Tuning the Drones
The drones are tuned to the low A on the pipe chanter. Sound low A on your chanter and adjust the calibration button until the meter reads "0". Adjust the tuning on each of your drones until they are reading "0" on the meter also.
