Blu-Ray Discs Are The Way Of The Future

Blu-ray movies are really cool. They offer really high quality picture quality. HD is the way of the future. After watching blu-ray I can't even watch regular DVDs anymore. I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshal the other day on blu-ray in my home theater and it wasn't even close to watching it on regular DVDs. And it is not just the picture quality that is better, the sound is incomparable. I really can not say enough good things about these regular discs.

I bought a high def TV, and when I view normal TV programming or even DVD movies it seems like a waste of my time. In realty it not even a good way to waste my day. I'd rather be reading or something like that as opposed to watching poor definition television. There are HD channels available, so that makes it better, but still I wish everything looked like blu-ray DVDs.

Many people don't buy blu-ray discs because they think they are prohibitively expensive. Yeah sure you pay a little more, but the quality is so worth it. They aren't really overly costly. You can buy blue ray movies if you look for them. In reality they don't cost all that much. One thing that can be said for sure is that they are worth the cost. I would buy blu-ray movies even if they were $100 each. As opposed to really looking at price, I'd rather consider the quality.

Considering how far tech has come in such a short time I can't imagine where it will be in another 20 or even 40 years. In reality pouring over all that stuff in your mind is of no value. I will just live in the present. That's why I don't know why more people don't buy blue ray players. Again yes they are a bit expensive, but again yes they are worth it. Without mine I'd go crazy... not to sound crazy.

Tintin The Belgium Boy Detective Explained

Tintin the Belgium boy detective is going to be put on the big screen and introduced to a wider audience the question to ask is who is Tintin? Tintin is a young Belgian reporter who through heroic action solves mysteries that are presented at the start of each comic book. Tintin was first introduced to the world in Tintin in the Land of the Soviets. Tintin was first introduced to the world in a Belgium paper in 1929-1930 by his creator George Remi.

Tintin and the Land of the Soviets was a political satire that poked fun at the Soviets claims to having a thriving economy and found an audience due to many people’s unease with the Soviet Empire. Remi himself had distrust for the Soviet Empire.

The Tintin comic series have an almost formulaic feel about it. The common thread of most Tintin albums is Tintin having to solve a mystery but also having to put together a story for his paper.

A great example of how a Tintin album works is Tintin and the Black Island. In The Black Island Tinitn sees a plane make an emergency landing and goes to try and help. Tintin goes to the pilots aid but it only results in the pilot trying to shoot him. Tintin then recovers in hospitable where he finds out that a similar plane crashed in a field in Sussex from the detectives Thompson and Thompson.

The logical step for Tintin is to now solve the mystery for himself. The adventure thus starts leading Tintin to be accused of assault and theft of a fellow passenger on a train journey and later kidnapped and forced to jump off a cliff (saved by his dog snowy before he is made too). Tintin follows the logical path which leads to an Island off Scotland where mysterious tales of a beast that is said to kill humans resides. Tintin discovers the Island to be the hideout of forgers and cleverly captures them and holds them till the police arrive.

Tintin is always able to solve the mysteries that are put before him although some are set over two books such as Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon. The odd tings about Tintin being a news reporter is that the reader will very rarely see him hand in an article but always solve the mystery in front of him. The end of the comic strips often sees him receiving a hero’s reception along with Captain Haddock and Snowy.

Tintin is a heroic young man but lacks the color of many of the other characters that appear in the comic books. Herge created a chararcter in Tintin with neutral attitudes which makes him easier to understand.

TV Licence Fee

I have to disagree about the BBC. The arguments against a TV licence are as follows. My answers follow the (numbered) quotes from the Facebook homepage.

1-- Like the Poll Tax, the TV License takes no account of your ability to pay, nor how much (if any) of the service you use. It hits the lowest incomes hardest by percentage of income.

You could argue the same about food, drink, cleaning products, petrol, holidays, cars, trousers or virtually anything else. In fact, income tax is the ONLY thing that takes account of ability to pay. Everything else just costs what it costs. So the TV license fee follows the same pattern as 99.9999999% things in the universe. I don't think this is a strong argument. Plus, as a percentage of income it's fallen massively since the 50s. It's now about 0.01% of average income, whereas it used to be about 0.07% - not a huge amount in either case, but definitely cheaper (in real terms) now. In fact, it costs slightly more than 38p per day. Crippling? I don't think so!

2-- When it started, there was only one use for a TV set, and only one broadcaster so a kitty type setup was fine, this has fragmented so much now that the BBC are a minority entertainment service that you can't unsubscribe from.

Actually in the UK more people watch BBC programmes than any other channel. You may not like their programming in all cases (I don't either) but that doesn't mean your argument is correct. They're not minority. They may not please everyone, but they have the largest share of audience, consistently, across all age and social groups. Fact.

3-- The BBC forces itself onto the airways and we are required to pay for its upkeep regardless of whether or not we watch it. £139.50 is too much to pay for reality tv, vapid sitcoms and endless repeats.

Advertisers increase the cost of their products to pay for the adverts they show. The average cost of an Audi car, for instance, would fall by £7,000 if they did absolutely no marketing. You pay £7,000 per Audi, just for them to advertise to you. The same applies to everything you see advertised on TV. In 2000 the average ITV viewer paid more than £1000 per year in extra costs on products they saw advertised. Comparatively, the BBC is cheap! And vapid sitcoms? Yes. But also David Attenborough, The Office, BlackAdder, Fawlty Towers, Boys from the Blackstuff, Simon Schama, the best news channel in the world (without a doubt)... stuff you simply WOULD NOT see on a commercial channel. The BBC chase ratings, but they also produce masses of FANTASTIC material aimed at minorities who would otherwise be totally ignored.

4-- At worst a service that you never use. We are forced to pay for a TV Licence, what ever happened to free choice?

True, that's the strongest argument. But have you REALLY never watched ANYTHING on BBC, or listened to the radio? Do you ONLY watch ITV or Sky? I doubt it. And if you do, you're missing out on Dr Who and Joolz Holland (to say the least).

5-- This is a complete monopoly (For example, I am a avid sports fan, i pay my money to Virgin media and the only TV I watch is Setanta, Sky Sports and Eurosport. But the nice people at the BBC think its fair to force me to pay them for channels im not using)

Well, you only have yourself to blame. In 1980 all sport was shown for FREE as part of your license fee (which was about £60 back then). Now you pay about £40 PER MONTH on Sky, Setanta, etc - and extra for premiership games, top movies etc. If nobody had signed up for Sky, the BBC would still show everything you want. You VOLUNTEERED to pay £45 per month for something you were already getting for FREE. Is it the BBC's fault that you made a stupid decision? No, it isn't.

6-- You wouldn't pay £140 a year to tax a car that you dont use would you? (answer yes to this question and you are a moron and i will gladly let you pay my car tax)

I repeat, do you NEVER watch Dr Who, Extras or the news? Never? EVER?! And before you call us idiots, remember who's volunteering to pay £40 a month for something the BBC used to give you for free.

7-- Every other channel funds itself by advertising, so why cant the BBC do the same. They are already screwing us over by showing BBC programs on Dave and the UKTV Network. Where they recieve money from advertisements. They can't have it both ways.

Why can't they have it both ways? I mean, the government has prevented them from increasing the licence fee, so they raise the money they need commercially. Isn't that what you argue for? OK, you may dislike the license fee in the first place, but it is INCREDIBLY cheap (38p per day), and provides 20+ TV channels, 50+ radio stations and the single best website in the world (it was voted best last year). If they didn't sell old programmes to Dave, the cost of the license fee would rise to a terrifying 44p per day (ooh, how will we cope, 44p for about 250 hours of new programming every day!).

You should also consider this: advertising revenues on TV are plummeting. ITV lost 30% of its income over the last 5 years. If the BBC had to fund 250 hours of programming per day by ADVERTS, the few adverts there are would be spread thinner - especially as the BBC has the most popular channels. So the income of ALL TV would fall, and programmes would suffer enormously - not just the BBC, but everybody.

8-- Im not saying get rid of the BBC, Just want them to fund themselves or allow us to opt out of their service.

I agree you should be able to opt out. But if you do, your radio, TV and Internet hardware would have to be amended to prevent you from accessing BBC content. And the cost of doing that would be prohibitively high. Can you imagine what you'd pay to have a thing fitted to your car to STOP you from getting BBC traffic news? Or what you'd pay to STOP your TV, digibox, Sky receiver, walkman, PC and every other device from getting Radio 1? It would be massively expensive. So yes, opting out is a good idea, but utterly impractical. Similarly, I'd like to opt out of paying towards the Iraq war by having my taxes cut. But it's never going to happen, is it?

9-- Why not have a system like PBS, where the rich and famous provide donations or a system that allows those on a lesser income to pay less? (can be done by the individuals tax code/band) - I am sure the likes of Beckham, Bono, Elton John to name a few, have got money to throw around. How about they contribute to the devices that got them their money in the first place?

So your argument is that you don't like paying for TV, so you'd like someone else to pay your share instead? And the richest people are mostly city traders - how does the BBC make them rich, exactly? It's just not a proper solution. And the poor pay less? Yes, I agree - but it is 38p per day, as I mentioned. That's less than the cost of a Twix. How poor do you have to be before the "lower" threshold hits? So poor you can't afford a Twix? Seems a bit extreme.

I can see why people dislike paying a license fee, but absolutely none of the arguments against it take into account what the costs of abolition would be.

Frankly if you want to save money, start pushing for government to abolish ALL taxation except income tax. Income tax is the only truly fair tax, but it's been slashed (to make tax look low) while other unfair tax has been increased. Scrap road fund license, TV license, VAT and all other taxes, and increase income tax by 5%. It would be a fair reflection of people's ability to pay, and nobody would moan about paying for the BBC any more.

TELEVISION - ITS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

By itself no tool, instrument or invention is good or bad. It is the way we use it that makes it good or bad.

So is the case with television. Television is the most wonderful invention capable of bringing the whole world of entertainment and education to our door. But the TV can be used for good purposes like education along with healthy entertainment. Just as a doctor gives sugar-coated pills to his patients, people can be educated through well-prepared and well-presented entertainment programmes. The TV can be used to teach people how to read and write, to teach farmers better methods of cultivation, to teach professional people to improve their professional efficiency, to teach people useful arts and crafts, to provide them useful information about what is happening in other parts of the world and to familiarize them with the latest discoveries, inventions and innovations in different branches of knowledge. TV programmes can also be used to cultivate good tastes and develop healthy interests, to teach people how to appreciate good things of life, to make them aware of their social responsibilities and to arouse people's interests and enthusiasm in the tasks of national development. TV programmes can reach millions of people in their homes. They can be watched by people at their convenient time if they are prepared in the form of video films. In this respect learning through TV is better than learning in schools and colleges.

In short, if TV programmes are planned to make people better citizens and better human beings, TV then will be a great blessing for mankind.

Impressions of Star Trek Remastered

At a time when Star Trek had been aired so frequently that prints were hazy, scratched and dull, Paramount/CBS figured it was time to re-engineer the original series (TOS) by restoring the original master prints, increasing the picture quality and re-recording the background music. Then they made the decision to go one better and replace the old special effects shots with digital CGI animations.

This venture was spurred on by the appearance of High Definition DVDs in the consumer marketplace. Just a year ago (late 2007), there was all-out war between the two competing High-Def formats: HDDVD and Blu-Ray. There was no clear winner in sight. All that changed in February 2008 when Warner Bros. finally committed exclusively to supporting the Blu-ray format.

Part of HDDVD's arsenal, though, was the release of the remastered TOS: Season One. Toshiba, who were backing HDDVD, invested a sizeable amount of money into the remastering project and the release of the remastered TOS series was heavily promoted.

TOS was all recorded on film which is inherently a high-contrast, high-definition medium. It was also shot using filmatic techniques. More recent series of Star Trek such as Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Next Generation were all shot using video, an inherently non-high-definition, low contrast medium. Plus, Star Trek: The Next Generation especially, was shot using low-contrast lighting that was fashionable at the time. The outcome of this is that it's [very that any of these series will ever make an appearance in high definition on Blu-Ray. I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek: The Original Series does make an appearance on Blu-Ray at some point in the future.

Impressions of Star Trek Remastered

Well, first off, it looks gorgeous in high definition. The original 4:3 aspect ratio has been kept and the prints are exceptionally crisp and clean. Images have more punch due to the somewhat boosted contrast. If there is a downside, it is the common criticism levelled at high-def: you can see too much detail. As an example, on the HDDVD you can see the zippers on the cast's shirts.

The HDDVD release featured a High-Definition version on one side and standard definition on the other side (so it plays in a normal DVD player). Both sides have a good set of extras with little material being repeated.

Now the rest of this review will look at the standard definition DVD releases of the remastered series.

A few months back, series one of the Remastered Star Trek was released in a standard DVD edition. in the meantime, TOS: Season Two has been released and the third series of TOS will be available in November. Should you already own the previously released version of the series on DVD (without remastered special effects and music), is there any reason to acquire yet another edition of Trek?

For me, having grown up watching the series, getting the HDDVD version was a must. I was more interested in image quality and the show looking as pristine as it did straight out of the camera in the 1960s. I have to admit to being a little dubious about the new CGI replacing old ship and other special effects shots and whether they'd be intrusive. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The FX do make the show even better, giving it a more immersive quality and drawing you further into each episode.

All the FX were done inhouse by CBS (who now own the rights to the TV series). While, for the most part, they've done an outstanding job, some ship effects look less realistic than others. I believe the company that created the effects for Enterprise were originally considered to create the Star Trek Remastered FX but their expenses were too high and so CBS did the effects inhouse instead.

The thing that makes the remastered series so great is that they aren't trying to alter or re-imagine the episodes (for better or worse). There's no showing off here. Instead what they've done is clean the show up and presented it exactly as it was originally meant to be, musical note for note, shot for shot. The background music has been completely re-recorded, but aside from the fact that it's now crystal clear (and in 5.1 Dolby Digital) you'd never know it. FX shots of the Enterprise have been rendered with CGI, but it's hard to tell any difference (except on rare occassions), and it now looks brilliant instead of worn out, washed out and incredibly grainy. The new FX fit seamlessly amongst the original live-action footage. Remember those black matte lines, especially around ships orbiting planets? They're gone. And Fuzzy prints? They're a thing of the past. The colors are brighter, the shadows are deeper and Star Trek has never looked as stunning.

Like I said earlier, I was dubious about a version of Star Trek that replaced spacecraft models with CGI or tampered with the originally recorded background music. But what they've done here is so faithful, that there's nothing that any Star Trek fan can do but stand up and applaud. All the work has been carried out by people who love the series; and it shows. It's just a shame it's not being put to better use. Paramount has declined to broadcast this new version in High Definition, even though they now have the capability to do it. Combine that with how difficult they're making it to see it on satellite and cable, and it's hard to find a reason for bothering with it on television.

Better to beam this pristine version of one of TV's most iconic and classic shows onto DVD at warp speed. And if you bought into HDDVD and don't have the Remastered HDDVD, pick that one up instead. You won't be disappointed.
