Eat your dinner in the dining room of the Titanic!

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is where you can find the White Swan Hotel. The dining room of this hotel is truly unique. It has been furnished with the original fixtures and fittings from the RMS Olympic, sister to the RMS Titanic.

When you walk into the dining room it’s like walking into the past. The carved oak panelling, mirrors and stained glass windows leap out at you as if from James Cameron’s award-winning movie. It is really quite a strange experience, like living nearly 100 years ago and expecting Leonardo di Caprio to appear at any moment.

If you want to visit the White Swan but perhaps prefer a private house then there is plenty to chose from in the local area.

Should you have any time left over then Alnwick Castle is always worth a visit as this was where two Harry Potter films were shot, the Chamber of Secrets and then the Philosophers Stone.

For film buffs there is quite a bit of movie history here, in addition to the Harry Potter ones, the following films all using the unique atmosphere at the castle.

1998 - Monk Dawson
Starring Martin Kemp and Rhona Mitra, directed by Tom Waller

1998 - Elizabeth
Starring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, and Christopher Eccleston; a Working Title production

1991 - Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Starring Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman

1982 - Ivanhoe
Starring Anthony Andrews and James Mason

1979 - The Spaceman and King Arthur
Starring Kenneth More and Jim Dale, and produced by Walt Disney

1971 - Mary Queen of Scots
Starring Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson, again produced by Hal Wallis

1964 - Becket
Starring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole, and produced by Hal Wallis

Finally , we should also mention Holy Island or Lindisfarne just up the coast. This is the site of a very early monastery built on a tidal island. That means that at high tide it is cut off from the mainland, so be careful!
